What is kitesurfing? Kite surfing (also known as kiteboarding) is a fusion of many fun sports, part wakeboarding, part paragliding, part kite flying, water skiing and of course surfing. From the innovative roots of the sport where a few dare devils used stacks of power kites and skis, kitesurfing has developed into a world recognized sport using an inflatable kite and a board to propel you over the sea.

Kitesurfing is a water sport that combines elements of surfing, windsurfing, and paragliding. It involves using a large kite to propel a rider across the water on a board. The kite is controlled by the rider using a bar connected to the lines of the kite.

The kitesurfing kite is made of a lightweight material, such as nylon or polyester, and is filled with air. The kite has a large surface area, which allows it to catch the wind and generate power. The rider controls the kite by adjusting the angle of the bar. When the bar is pulled in, the kite creates more lift. When the bar is released, the kite's power reduces.

The rider stands on a board that is similar to a surfboard or wakeboard. The board has foot straps that allow the rider to stay in control of the board. The rider uses their body weight and the movements of the kite to propel themselves across the water.

Kitesurfing can be done in a variety of conditions, but it is best suited for windy days. The wind speed should be at least 12 knots (14 mph) for beginners and 18 knots (21 mph) for experienced riders. Kitesurfing can be done in both salt water and fresh water.

There are many different aspects to kitesurfing, including:

  • Launching and landing: This is the process of getting the kite up in the air and back down to the ground.
  • Upwind riding: This is the process of riding the kite into the wind.
  • Downwind riding: This is the process of riding the kite downwind.
  • Tricking: This is the process of performing acrobatic moves on the board.

Kitesurfing is a challenging but rewarding sport. It is a great way to get exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and have fun.

Here are some of the reasons why kitesurfing is popular:

  • It is a relatively new sport, so there is still a sense of adventure and discovery.
  • It is a great way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors.
  • It can be done in a variety of conditions, so it is accessible to people of all skill levels.
  • It is a relatively safe sport, as long as it is practiced in a safe environment.
  • It is a social sport, and there are many opportunities to meet other kitesurfers.

We primarily teach with kites and twin tip boards (these are symmetrical like a wakeboard) and allow easy travel in both directions. In recent years kiting on a surfboard or hydrofoil has become more popular too, to categorize the two seperate disciplines sometimes twin tip riding is referred to as kiteboarding and surfboard riding as kitesurfing and kite foiling on a hydrofoil. To keep up with the trend we now offer kite lessons with surfboard to those that want to learn this way.

People that have completed an IKO or BKSA course can now HIRE KITESURFING EQUIPMENT from usIf transporting kitesurfing kit is an issue for you we do an annual kite club hire membership.
